If you have an accident on a motorway, the first thing you must do is signal left and pull over onto the hard shoulder using it as a deceleration lane. At the same time activate the emergency flashing lights on your vehicle.
 
As you come to a stop leave the car as far to the left as you can and turn the wheels to the left as well. Leave your side lights on if visibility is poor.
 
It is extremely dangerous to stay in your car so get out as soon as possible through the passenger door and climb over to the other side of the safety barrier.
 
If you have a reflective triangle set it up on the hard shoulder about 150 metres behind your vehicle.
 
It is always best to use the emergency phone rather than your mobile, as this will also alert the emergency services and also help pinpoint your position. The markers beside the hard shoulder indicate the direction of the nearest phone.
 
If you are a member of a roadside assistance organisation take the details with you with your membership number. The emergency call operator will call your assistance service to send out a recovery vehicle. Otherwise a contract recovery service will be instructed to send assistance, but you will have to pay for it.
 
Face oncoming traffic while you make the call, and return to the safe side of the safety barrier as soon as possible. Do not try to repair your vehicle yourself
