Worse still the Government has told the Highways Agency to ignore any motorway potholes smaller than the size of a soup bowl from 2015. With rises in fuel duty and road tax it leaves motorists outraged at the news.
At high-speed a small pothole can crack a driveshaft. Shock absorbers fracture easily. And a suspension coil spring can snap like a carrot.
Potholes also weaken tyre walls. The damage may not be immediately apparent, but after a while the wall can start to bulge and blister.
Damaged tyres and suspension are an accident waiting to happen, and can invalidate a potentially successful car accident claim either against the policyholder’s own insurance or as a no fault accident claim.
