Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke has announced that reckless drivers will now face a longer jail sentence. The government is to enforce tougher penalties that aim to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities on UK roads. Drivers found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving currently serve a 14-year prison sentence while those who are guilty of other dangerous driving offences only face two years.
The new penalty aims to reduce reckless driving by introducing a longer sentence for those found guilty. Dangerous driving ruins lives and this new law aims to increase the safety of UK roads.
The new laws state that drivers found guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving will be sentenced to a minimum of five years. These punishments are to reflect the devastation caused to the person making a car accident claim as well as the devastation caused to the person’s family.
