If you are involved in a car or motorcycle accident that involves damage or injury to another person you are required by law to stop. You must also stop if the accident involves an animal such as a domestic or farm animal, or and road side property such as street furniture or a fence.
For safety reasons you should ensure that the engine of all vehicles involved is switched off, and the hazard warning lights activated. If available a warning triangle should be erected at least 50 metres behind the accident. If the road is totally blocked, you should try to organise some sort of traffic warning and control.
In the event of serious injury or if the vehicles are involved you should call the emergency services, dialling 999 from a landline or 112 from your mobile phone.
Unless there is a serious risk of fire you should not try to move injured persons from their vehicles. Any injury can be seriously aggravated if the victim is moved without specialist assistance.
You have a legal obligation to report an accident involving personal injury to the police within 4 hours of the incident. You should also make a note of the name and number of the police officer attending, and the appropriate police station. These details are important should you need to make a no fault accident claim.
